India’s green energy transition is moving beyond solar, wind, and electric mobility. While renewable electricity remains important, industries and transport systems also need cleaner liquid fuels that can work with existing infrastructure. This is where biofuels are becoming increasingly important.
Biofuels are produced from renewable biological sources such as sugarcane, molasses, grains, agricultural residues, used cooking oil, and organic waste. They can help reduce dependence on fossil fuels while supporting cleaner transportation and industrial energy use.
Why Biofuels Matter in India’s Energy Transition
India has a large and growing energy demand. At the same time, the country is working toward lower emissions, better energy security, and cleaner industrial growth. India’s non-fossil fuel installed capacity reached 283.46 GW as of 31 March 2026, and the country ranked third globally in renewable energy installed capacity, showing the scale of its clean energy push.
However, not every sector can shift immediately to electricity. Heavy transport, aviation, industrial heating, logistics, and fuel blending still require liquid and gaseous fuels. Biofuels can fill this gap by offering a practical renewable fuel option.
Role of Ethanol Blending
One of the strongest examples of biofuel adoption in India is the Ethanol Blended Petrol Programme. Ethanol blending helps reduce petrol consumption, supports domestic fuel production, and creates demand for agricultural feedstocks.
India’s ethanol blending level reached 19.05% by 31 July 2025 during ESY 2024–25, with July 2025 alone achieving 19.93% blending. This shows how quickly ethanol blending has become part of India’s fuel strategy.
Biofuels and Waste Utilisation
The future of biofuels in India is not limited to sugarcane or grains. Second-generation ethanol and compressed biogas can be produced from agricultural residues, municipal waste, animal waste, and other organic materials. This supports a circular economy where waste becomes energy.
The SATAT initiative was launched to build an ecosystem for producing compressed biogas from waste and biomass sources and promoting its use along with natural gas.
